Issue 2

The Vanadium Loop

Welcome to summer! Spring has officially sprung and in record time I must say, this year has flown. Not surprising though as I’ve been super busy working on many personal & professional improvements, as well as managing to enjoy a little much needed time out in Bali to rejuvenate in preparations for the impending crazy Christmas season that happens each year.

We’ve introduced The Vanadium Lounge “Men’s Grooming” area, minimized our reception area and added a beautifully made new front desk courtesy of Edge Living, who I can highly recommend for service, choice and price.
Our team has polished up on our styling skills ready for the party season. We’ve researched and practiced some key treads to ensure our guests have the best hair at any event. Personally, I am in love with the relaxed beach look, lots of texture through mid-lengths and softening out through the ends. I must say a Cloud 9 wand is essential, making this look effortless to achieve, in addition with the new Session Black Label products, which are walking out the door, anyone can look like they’re about to step onto the red carpet.

In a first we’re asking you guys, our biggest fans and continued guests of the salon what annoys you the most about a hair salon/getting your hair done? We honestly want to know so was can see what we can do about it, so please drop us a line, tell your stylist or visit our Facebook page to share your thoughts.

As always, your continued loyalty & support is very much appreciated & I’m eternally grateful to be blessed with such an inspiring & diverse extended family in you all & in my incredible team.

Trending this season…  when it comes to Essential looks we are lucky we can continue to have fun with these trends over two seasons and carry them over into summer. Let’s not be boring when it comes to modeling these looks… change it up! For example, when it comes to Colorama, make it louder this season as the sun is giving us a little more intensity so should you! Perfect for festival season, your friends need to find you in a crowd some how right? Never be afraid to ask your stylist to mix up your look, we love it! Remember, you don’t need a drastic change to create something a little different and have you feeling fresh once again. Below are the current essential looks along with this summer’s new cool street styles from OSIS+.

This trend is bound to turn heads. Think vibrant, metallic, colourful and edgy. Clashing colours is not out of the question. There a no limits to colourama when it comes to quirky, rebellious, layering and patter
n combinations as it screams funky attitude loud and clear.

The opulent trend is all class. It embeds timeless glamour and infuses Marilyn Monroe confidents with rich colours, waves and most importantly opulence. It is a modern twist on the 1950’s French Riviera style capital bringing a seductive, sophisticated and contemporary edge.

This trend combines our current all time style icons (#GiGi for one) into a look, which is perfectly imperfect, clean cut and simply elegant. In a time where we have no time, beat ikon is for now. Styling full fringes, textured body and short cuts. This look is coloured in all shades of blonde along with the new trend of smudged roots. A modern take on 90’s grown out bleach.

Product… if only there was one that did everything we asked, sculpted every look we wanted and tamed all of our manes. There are endless amounts of products out there for us to access. They claim that they can do all sorts making it understandably overwhelming to pick the right one for your needs. So much so that your own bathroom cupboard becomes overwhelming to look at! We like to break it down for you weekly on our social media with our “Product of the Week” post aiming to educate you honestly about our products. Here is our favourite product of the week over the past months.

Introducing….. BC Excellium Taming Range!

This range is full of Q10 and Omega 3 that are more commonly heard of in the food and cosmetic industry for doing wonders to our body and skin! Well, this co-enzyme and essential nutrient continue working wonders for out hair too! Q10 stimulates the hair root to reactivate keratin production whilst Omega 3 helps tae wiry, coarse and unruly mature hair turning it to silk while it smooths the hair surface. This range is designed to return mature hair back to its youthful self through nourishment and rejuvenation all whilst preserving hair colour.
After using this range in the salon the VL team have found it to not only work wonders on “
mature” hair. The range is amazing at taming wild curls and all frizzy hair. It is a beautiful product to use as the contents itself is like silk to handle leaving you with no doubt that the hair is going to feel just like that by the end of the treatment!

Do you find that your hair is mature yet fine? The BC Excellium Q10 care range also has an extended range to suit you. Don’t be afraid to discuss with us any questions you may have in regards to Excellium Q10, we know you will love it as much as we are!

The absolute colour range is for 100% grey coverage. This launch is super exciting for the VL team as it is the first and long awaited launch of 100% grey Absolute coverage colours in cool tones! Myth Busters

Quote: “Your hair will grow quicker if it is trimmed regularly”.

We’ve all heard this one and it is a frequently asked question in the salon whether or not this statement is true!

Let’s strip it back. Your hair grows from the root therefore trimming the ends isn’t going to speed up or slow down
the growth process. However, by not getting your hair trimmed you run the risk of forming split ends, which then creates breakage resulting in loss of length.

So at the end of the day, if your goal is to have long, healthy, lushes hair we advise you to get trims to maintain the condition approximately every 6 weeks. Slow and steady wins the race!

With summer now in full swing, a lot of us don’t know how important it is to wear sunscreen under our makeup. No matter what type of skin you have we can all get sun damage which can lead to wrinkles, dark spots and worst of all skin cancer.

An easy solution to preventing sun damage is to wear a face sunscreen underneath your makeup or alternatively find a foundation that has SPF in it. Be careful when wearing SPF foundations as in photos they create a flash black which can leave you looking extra white compared to the rest of your body.

Leave the sunscreen to soak into your skin for approximately 5-10 minutes as this allows your skin to soak up the SPF and make your makeup application easier.

Use a sunscreen that is meant for the face as they’re lightweight and non-greasy on your skin. Regular sunscreen usually feels quite heavy on the skin and some brands can feel super greasy.

Mecca Cosmetica’s “To Save Face” sunscreen, SPF 30+.

Lightweight, non-greasy and hydrating. Feels more like a moisturizer than a sunscreen.

A Converted Commuter

Having always lived a walk able distance from my work places I developed a disdain for bus travel. Childhood perceptions that each and every passing bus obtained at least one child wearing glasses with one or other lens masked by skin tone band aids linger into adulthood. But, that has changed with relocation to Mount Stuart.
I enjoy my thirty minute walk to T.V.L and have grown to enjoy the bus ride home to Mount Stuart via West Hobart and North Hobart, though the bus and it’s route is only labeled “Mount Stuart via West Hobart”. I am a happily converted commuter.

Our World

Stylist Cat: I attended Deni Ute Muster.
Stylist Bridie: Over the spring school term I began teaching a beautiful class of 7-12 year olds of a Monday afternoon at Healthy Horizons Gym the new “Let Loose” dance program. This program is designed to get kids moving through dance in a fun, encouraging and non-competitive environment!
Stylist Seuz: I had an amazing spring with my beloved Wally. I had a quick trip up to QLD to visit my parents in September. This was the first time my father had met my son. Family love is always the most pure. In October I was blessed enough to have a week off mother/work duties where I invested my time in a week of mindset and personal development work in Adelaide. This was crazy intense but so rewarding and all will benefit from this in the future. Summer is around the corner and I am soooo excited to be heading to Melbourne for Christmas day but will be back to sort anyone out for NYE celebrations.
Stylist Gerard: New digs, sunny, light filled and thirty-minute walk to work!

Uniting Emergency Relief

Ali’s Experience:
When I heard from my client Janice how funding to the Emergency Relief service had been cut by 40% and saw with my very own eyes the bare shelves at the center that those who require emergency and immediate assistance visit to receive help, I was horrified and appalled, as are the wonderful emergency relief officers who council and assess those who are less fortunate than our self’s. The very thought of mothers being unable to feed their children, sleeping in freezing cars or worse… Teenagers who need a safe place or who are homeless and simply need a warm meal… For this to be so common in this day and age is heartbreaking. So, I’ve dedicated The Vanadium Lounge and myself to make regular contributions to the center.

Firstly, I cleaned out my home and donated everything I would have either sold or donated. Secondly, I had a discussion with the boys in my household explaining the situation. We agreed that we would forgo a treat each week when I did the shopping; instead I’d buy food for the center and donate. I also always add in a few nonperishables such as baked beans or noodles, especially if there are specials on. Thirdly I’ve been spreading the word to friends and family who have very generously been supplying me with goods to take into the center.

My mission is to encourage our salon guests to bring in an item of food or clothing when visiting the salon. If anyone is having a clean out I’m personally more than happy to collect anything that will fit in my car and deliver to the center. If you are able to help in anyway please shoot the salon an email or give us a call.

Thank You in advanced for supporting the Emergency Relief center and us.

Below is from Janice – Emergency Relief Officer
Uniting’s Emergency Relief (ER) is the provision of assistance to people in need. It consists of the provision of financial and material aid to meet an immediate need and a referral service link to people with specialist community services. Multiple misfortunes can sometimes contribute to a crisis that leads to financial stress and assistance is usually provided through:

  • Financial and/or material aid to meet an immediate need e.g. this could include food vouchers, assistance with utility bills, food parcels, clothing or household goods, toiletries and blankets.
  • A service which assists people to identify the options available to them in response to their needs.

Our program offers direct assistance to people with dignity and compassion, while encouraging strategies towards self-reliance and resilience through referrals and budgeting. We can assist people in the areas of Kingston, Huon, Cygnet, Hobart City and Bridgewater/Gagebrooke.

What we’re Talkin’ bout (and loving):

Our very own stylist Gerard of many talents’ famous cake recipe!
“In 2008 I had the honor of receiving a request from Gourmet Traveller Australia for the recipe I had designed as a signature gluten free cake to serve in our restaurant Qom. Of course I decided to share Qom’s Persian Love Cake, which debuted in the September edition that year followed by GTA’s Best Chefs’ Recipes 2008. Annabel Crabb and Wendy Sharpe included it in their 2015 book Special Delivery and more recently a reworked version appeared in Sweet by London based Yotam Ottolenghi and Helen Goh.” – Gerard #stylistgerard

Persian Love Cake
Prep time 15mins, Cook 35mins (plus cooling)
Serves 8

360 gm(3 cups) almond meal
220 gm (1 cup) raw sugar
220 gm (1 cup) brown sugar
120 gm unsalted butter, softened
2 eggs lightly beaten

250 gm Greek-style yogurt, plus extra to serve
1tbsp freshly grated nutmeg
45 gm (1/4 cup) pistachios, coarsely chopped

Preheat oven to 180C. Combine almond meal, sugars, butter and 1 tsp salt in a bowl, then rub with fingertips until coarse crumbs form. Spoon half the mixture into a lightly buttered and baking paper-lined 26cm-diameter spring form pan, gently pressing to evenly cover base.
Add egg, yogurt and nutmeg to remaining crumble mixture and beat with wooden spoon until smooth and creamy. Pour over prepared base, smooth top, scatter pistachios around edge and bake until golden (30-35 minutes.) Cool completely in pan.
